ENDOCRINE DIABETES cmE JUNE 1st 2006- FRH

Endocrine- Diabetes CME on June 1st 2006 was an excellent meeting with a high educational content and covered a variety of relevant topics. The Endocrine session in the morning kicked off with Dr.Ujjal Mallik’s thorough and exhaustive presentation on current controversies in management of differentiated thyroid cancers. Some of the issues covered included the staging systems used, current consensus on the extent of surgery, European consensus on radioablation treatment, high dose versus low dose radioiodine ablation, use of thyrogen and management of patients with positive thyroglobulin but negative scan. This was followed by an elegant case presentation by Reena. Suresh then presented a fascinating audit on the potential use of metformin therapy as a diagnostic test to differentiate hyperandrogenism due to benign causes (PCOS and ovarian hyperthecosis) from ovarian and adrenal malignancies. This was well appreciated by the audience and generated a good amount of discussion. Simon Pearce gave a very practical talk on how to build a successful research career in Endocrinology. The useful tips and advices from a person with such an amazing research background was a great motivation for everyone. I am sure the SpRs especially the Juniors would have taken a keen note of the exciting opportunities available.

The afternoon session on Diabetes maintained the same high standard as the Endocrine talks, with 3 eminent speakers giving authoritative lectures on current hot topics. Jim Shaw presented interesting data on the local experience in Insulin pump use and his views on future technological advances. Insulin inhalers have been hitting headlines for some time now and Prof.Home’s lecture really gave us a thorough overview of current evidence in this topic. The fact remains that there are still a lot of questions to be answered before it becomes widely used. Prof.Taylor underlined the rapidly increasing incidence of GDM and pregnancy in women with type 2 diabetes and the continued need for effective counselling in these women to improve the foetal outcome. Use of metformin and glargine in pregnancy are other important developments, which could become standard practice in not too distant future. Congrats to Arut and Reena for organising such a valuable meeting. Surely I for one will look forward to the next one in Autumn with great interest.
