RITAs 2007

Dear Colleague,

I am now organising the above. By my calculation the following will need a PYA:
Beas Bhattacharya
Muthu Jayapaul
Akheel Syed
Eelin Lim
Andrew Advani
I have determined this by grouping together all those with a CCT date before 31st December 2008. If you believe that you are either due a PYA or no longer require one contact me urgently.
The PYAs will be held on Friday 18th May 2007 in the morning. Please make sure that you are available if you have a PYA. Also I have selected Khaled Mansur-Dukhan and Subir Ray to also undergo a RITA with the External assessor on this date as part of Quality Assurance. Can you both please also make yourselves available on these date.
On Friday 18th May 2007 in the afternoon time will be available to finish any outstanding RITA Gs.
The remainder of trainees who will not be undertaking a PYA or RITA G are asked to make sure that they are available on the morning of Friday 25th May 2007 for a 15-minute feedback session following their RITA report from the previous week. A timetable will be issued in due course. Of course those of you out of the region undertaking a OOPE will not be expected to attend as your RITA F can be managed electronically.

Best wishes,

Shaz Wahid
Training Programme Director

Scottish Junior Diabetes Forum: 17th - 18th November 2006

Scottish Junior Diabetes Forum

17th and 18th November 2006
Hilton Dunkeld House Hotel

Dear Colleague

We would like to cordially invite you to the Scottish Junior Diabetes Forum on the 17th and 18th of November 2006. The venue is the Hilton Dunkeld House Hotel in Perthshire. The meeting will begin on Friday evening with a presentation from an esteemed Scottish consultant followed by dinner and some good old fashioned networking.

On Saturday morning following breakfast there will be the ‘scientific sessions’ with short presentations from researchers in diabetes and endocrinology. There is a prize, as ever, for the best talk! The aim this year is to try and encourage as many people to attend as possible; especially those out with a 10 mile radius of the Clyde! In addition to Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow we are extending the invitation to Newcastle who are customarily invited to other Scottish University and Academic events! We would therefore be delighted to receive abstracts for short oral communications (10 minutes) at the meeting and these should be submitted to Fraser Gibb by October the 1st 2006 to the email address above. They should be no more than 1 side of A4 in length so we can prepare the abstract book. We will be looking to include 10 presentations to maximize the academic and educational aspect of the meeting.

We would be grateful if you could give a provisional yes or no by 1st of September 2006 and a definite answer by the 29th of September 2006 so that we may alert the Hilton! Places will be limited, by the size of the venue and as the invitation has extended to Newcastle delegates providing definite plans to attend and present will be given precedence. This meeting is sponsored by Pfizer once more this year who are now over 5 years into sponsoring and sustaining the Scottish Junior Diabetes Forum. Our list of contacts and email addresses especially from centers out with Fife may well be incomplete and I would be glad to hear of other clinicians in diabetes and endocrinology who would be interested in attending.

With best wishes,

Fraser Gibb

National Training Scheme for the use of Thyroid Ultrasound by Endocrinologists: 31 Oct 2006

National Training Scheme for the use of Thyroid Ultrasound by Endocrinologists

Tuesday 31 October 2006 - 10.00 am – 5.00 pm
The Postgraduate Centre, Mayday University Hospital, Croydon

This is the advanced notice of the first training workshop for thyroid ultrasound by endocrinologists. This new one day course will be held on the day before the British Thyroid Association Meeting at the Royal Free Hospital London. The total journey time from central London to Croydon is 30 to 40 minutes with trains running at least every 10 minutes.

This new one day course is an essential part of the new national training scheme for certification for the use of ultrasound in the management of thyroid diseases by non-radiologists. The other essential components of the scheme, upon which guidance will be given, will be locally arranged.

The new curriculum for training and certification for neck ultrasound by non- radiologists has been drawn up jointly by the British Thyroid Association and the Royal College of Radiologists. The programme is also sanctioned by the Society for Endocrinology and approved by the Royal College of Physicians from whom CPD has been requested. The training programme will be appropriate for established clinicians who manage thyroid diseases and thyroid cancer and senior SpRs.

The full programme for the workshop will be circulated after registration. The workshop includes the essential core knowledge to proceed to Level 1 certification and includes sessions on the theory, principles and practice of ultrasound and its application to the neck and to thyroid examination, and biopsy. As well as the appropriate theory content, the course will include practical hands on sessions in neck ultrasound and thyroid biopsy techniques.

An application form will be circulated shortly to members of the British Thyroid Association, the Society for Endocrinology, ABCD and other appropriate organisations.
