Good Practice in Educational Supervision
A Training Day for Educational Supervisors Working with Junior Doctors or Dentists
This one-day training course has been developed to help consultants and senior SpRs adopt a practicable and effective approach to the educational supervision of junior staff. The training day will be useful to both new and experienced educational supervisors who are involved in facilitating the development of SHOs and SpRs.
As the role of educational supervision becomes more clearly defined in the light of GMC recommendations, educational supervisors need to be aware of the responsibilities and practicalities of their role and to be actively developing the required skills through their own programme of adult, self directed, experiential learning.
Those attending the training will have the opportunity to practice identifying learning needs and developing learning plans; to become aware of the range of training skills and their own further training needs; and to gain insight into the importance of feedback skills and the difference between managed learning, appraisal and assessment.
The training day covers the principles and processes of educational supervision and allows delegates the opportunity to explore what educational supervision means to them in terms of managing the role and their need for personal development.
The day includes:
Establishing the role of the educational supervisor
Adult self directed learning
Identifying learning needs
Learning Plans
The process of educational supervision
Action plans for educational supervisors
The flexible programme emphasises the importance of discussion in order to fully explore the principles and practicalities of educational supervision.
Teaching methods include tutor input, discussion and individual and group exercises. Delegates will also receive a pack of support materials that include guidance and tools to help them perform the role.
